He Got Her Number--And He Called Her!

My daughter was SO excited because her crush finally called her! She gave him her phone number days ago, but she worried when he didn't call. I think we are moving closer and closer into the land of "boyfriend and girlfriend." (sigh!) She was on cloud nine after he called--they didn't talk long, but they wished each other a Merry Christmas and promised to stay in touch during the winter break. I think they are going to miss each other a lot! My daughter couldn't stop smiling after she got off of the phone with him--she is definitely smitten!

A Christmas Story

My teens seem to think that they have outgrown most Christmas movies, but they still seem to like this one. We all do! We can often be heard quoting the famous line, "You'll shoot your eye out!" We LOVED the cell phone commercial that was a take-off of this movie--instead of quoting the line, they said, "You'll run the bill up!" Every parent of teenagers understands this issue--teens want cell phones and parents worry about hugely inflated bills. That is one reason that the pay-as-you-go plan can work better than a "family plan"--the teens have to learn to budget their minutes, and there is no chance of being surprised with a huge monthly bill. I am with Verizon, but it would cost quite a bit per month to add two more people to my plan--plus, we would have to share our minutes. I'm thinking the pay-as-you-go plans would work much better for our family. More about this later--but the commercial always reminds me of the movie and vice-versa. We love lots of great scenes in this movie--it is definitely our family favorite! :)

Feeding The Masses

I went grocery shopping for all of our holiday groceries--whoa! Feeding two teenagers is getting really expensive--especially during the holidays! While our grocery list is changing and there are no longer lots of kids snacks and treats on the list, there are many things replacing those outgrown items. I used to buy kids cereals, fruit snacks, kids fruit drinks, etc. Now I buy whole grain cereals, healthier (and more expensive) snacks, and drinks such as coffee and colas. I think groceries are just getting more expensive anyway--as the cost of gas goes up, so does everything else (to compensate). The trucks that bring in the milk have to spend more on fuel, so the cost gets distributed to the milk and other products. I've noticed that a lot lately--milk has definitely gone up a lot in the past year or so. Then add the more expensive items that my teens like--plus add larger quantities because they eat more now--our grocery bills are getting ridiculous! You know the saying, "They are eating us out of house and home"--well, it's kind of true with teenagers! A large part of our monthly bills goes to feeding them! And they really don't eat THAT much--they don't overeat and they are not overweight. Still, it takes a lot of groceries (and money) to satisfy their growing appetites. They seem to be getting taller by the minute! I guess feeding them through the growth spurts will eventually taper off, but right now they seem to be ravenous after school each day. I gladly do it, but I am sometimes astounded by the large quantities of groceries our family consumes each week. Maybe we can analyze our list and cut some corners here and there. But the holiday meals and special treats were wonderful and well worth it!

Gingerbread Latte

I know that this is strictly seasonal, but oh is it good! I took my teens to Starbucks after school on the last day before winter break--a welcome to the season kind of thing. They both enjoy coffee and other drinks there, but they opted to try something new this time. We drank gingerbread lattes and shared a piece of gingerbread together. Yum, yum!! I enjoyed our holiday treat and will miss it when it is gone!

Peppermint Pie

I couldn't find a photo of the exact kind of pie, but Burger King has a delicious new flavor: peppermint pie. It is made with York peppermint patties, and it is delicious! Their sundae pie is good, but I think the peppermint pie is even better! My teens enjoyed a slice, too--they said it was one of the best pies they've ever eaten. I hope they continue to carry the flavor after the holidays--sometimes restaurants only offer things seasonally, but this is good enough to stay all year! :)

Gifts of Love

They purchased a few special things for a few special people in their lives. I guess we are now moving into that stage--yeah, they still want lots of things from us, but now they exchange gifts with friends and other special people. They gave some nice things and they received some nice things. Everyone seems to be getting into the spirit of giving! :)

Presents For Friends and Significant Others

Before winter break began, my teens wanted to purchase some Christmas gifts for their friends and "significant others." They had to stay within a fairly small budget, but I think they did a good job choosing things that were appropriate. When it came down to time to wrap the gifts, they chose to put them in gift bags instead of wrapping them. I love gift bags! I never was very good at gift wrapping, and the bags just make things so much easier. I love to use bags for my teens, too. To prevent peeking, I staple them closed. They make a nice presentation under the tree! :)
